Dragan Marković Markus

Biography

Dragan Marković Markus is a Serbian painter whose artistic practice has developed over several decades through a sustained exploration of the human figure and its psychological and existential relationship with contemporary space. Born in Šabac, Serbia, he graduated with a degree in Painting and earned his master's degree at the Academy of Arts in Novi Sad, later completing a doctorate in Painting in Belgrade.

Markus works primarily with acrylic paint on canvas. His painting is characterized by an expressive, gestural approach, a restrained yet emotionally charged palette, and a persistent focus on the human figure. Throughout his career, he has developed a strong and distinctive visual language in which the figure is often placed within reduced, ambiguous, or urban spaces. Themes of alienation, isolation, vulnerability, anxiety, and the individual's position within contemporary society recur throughout his work.

His artistic development has unfolded through interconnected cycles, including Figure and Space, Scream (KRIK), Don't Touch Me, and EXIT. Rather than functioning as separate projects, these bodies of work form a continuing investigation into the human condition. The figure, sometimes exposed and fragile and at other times transformed into a sign or archetypal presence, remains the central carrier of psychological and existential meaning.

Over the course of his career, Markus has presented his work in numerous solo and group exhibitions in Serbia and internationally. His international exhibition activity includes participation in the Florence Biennale, the Trieste Biennale, and Biennale Milano, as well as exhibitions and presentations in Paris, Berlin, New York, Miami, Kyoto, and other international art centers. His work has also been featured in numerous international curated projects and art publications.

His work has received awards and recognition in Serbia and abroad. Among the distinctions particularly significant to his artistic development is the Academy Council Award of the Academy of Arts in Novi Sad, followed by national and international awards for painting and artistic achievement. He has also served on professional art juries and was Vice President of the Artistic Council of ULUS, the Association of Fine Artists of Serbia.

His painting has remained firmly grounded in the conviction that the human figure can still carry the tensions and contradictions of its time. While his visual language has evolved, the central concerns of his practice have remained consistent: the individual confronted with space, society, and inner experience. Through a powerful and expressive artistic approach, Markus seeks to establish a direct emotional connection with the viewer, encouraging them to question their own perceptions, attitudes, and understanding of the human condition. This continuity between artistic development and persistent inquiry defines his contribution to contemporary figurative painting.

Artist Statement

I believe that a painting must carry an energy capable of shattering the viewer's indifference and leaving a powerful impression.

My paintings are a response to my life experiences and my relationship with reality. My artistic vision explores the darker side of existence, both personal and universal. Beyond conventional notions of beauty, I seek to express fear, anxiety, and the tragic dimensions of human life.

The solitary figure becomes a means of exploring human existence in relation to time and space, reflecting the individual's alienation and vulnerability.

The scream, as a recurring theme in my work, emerges from my inner unrest and represents a form of human exposure, a stripping away to the raw color of flesh. This exposure is metaphorical rather than literal, although the color red inevitably evokes blood and living flesh. The scream expresses fear, helplessness, and the moment when human vulnerability is laid bare. Whether we are aware of it or not, every scream is also a call for help, an expression of our fundamental need for one another.

Through my paintings, I seek to reach the viewer emotionally and encourage them to reflect on the human condition. I strive to create sincere and powerful art, which I define as art that is inseparable from the inner being of its creator.
