Carl Jackson

Carl Jackson

His work is an attempt to describe an ever more complex world that most of humanity is not equipped to deal with. A recent graphite piece has the title "Smart but Not Smart Enough" which is central to his belief, that we, as a species, though clever, and even capable in many ways, cannot overcome our negative impulses. Greed, self-interest, sociopathy, neurosis, demagoguery and aggressiveness when abetted by unfettered technology, far outweigh our better impulses.

The oft-repeated maxim about old men decrying the excesses, indiscretions and stupidity of the young no longer applies. Evolution of technology without concomitant maturation of our ability to control our negative impulses is a disastrous stew. These are not new ideas, but he does believe the rise of fascism, enhanced by a "weaponized" news media, the World Wide Web and the exponentially rapid rise of Artificial Intelligence make the future increasingly uncertain.

Carl Jackson has been an Artist, Art Instructor for over 50 years. Along the way He has been an Illustrator, arts administrator, concept artist and gallery director. His work is included in various public collections including the Boston Public Library, The Addison Gallery of American Art, The Brooklyn Museum, and Rutgers University.

His work has been shown nationally and in many private galleries including Alan Stone in NY, Sherry Frumkin in Los Angeles and Fountainhead Gallery in Seattle. He has had 2 one person Museum exhibitions of his work; The Addison Gallery of American Art in Andover MA, and at the University of Oregon Museum, in Eugene OR. His background is varied: He is a graduate of Annapolis, and served aboard nuclear submarines; upon leaving the Navy he attended and graduated from Rhode Island School of design.
