Vasco Diogo

Vasco Diogo

Vasco Diogo is a multidisciplinary artist and researcher whose work spans experimental cinema, video art, performance, animation, drawing, painting, sound art and electronic music, poetry, mobile media, and artificial intelligence. With a foundation in film theory and artistic research, he integrates practice and reflection, constantly testing the boundaries between disciplines, tools, and states of consciousness. His work emerges at the intersection of aesthetics, technology, and inner transformation.

Drawing on years of experience in academia and the moving image, Diogos artistic process is rooted in experimentation and medium specificity. Each project is a laboratory for freedom, a space where media are not simply tools but collaborators. Whether working with AI-generated images, mobile phone applications, or traditional drawing and painting, he listens to what each material wants to become. Technology, in his view, is not neutral: it participates, evokes, resists, and transforms.

Diogos practice is also spiritual, without being dogmatic. It seeks self-knowledge through creative process, allowing the unconscious and the sacred to speak through form, voice, and rhythm, in an intimate dialogue between the visible and the invisible, the self and the cosmos, the personal and the transpersonal.

His work emerges from solitude but is never solitary. It is created in co-participation with spiritual forces, ancestral memories, and technological presence. He understands art as a ritual of liberation and transformation, a confession shaped not by guilt but by revelation. He does not aim to explain; he aims to evoke. Each image, word, or gesture becomes a portal, a key to a dimension just beyond language, just beyond the self. He seeks not to represent reality but to transfigure it.

He believes art can be a vehicle for soul-work and an instrument of healing, not through clarity, but through mystery. Ultimately, Diogo creates from a place of devotion. Devotion to the act of creation, to the mystery of being alive, to the possibility of transformation through art. His goal is not to entertain or to convince, it is to open a space where something sacred might occur. A space where the audience, like himself, might remember what was forgotten, and touch, if only for a moment, the unspeakable.

His mixed media works often integrate voice performance, digital noise, painterly textures, and archival material in compositions that challenge linear time and stable identity. He approaches creation as a ritual of becoming an embodied inquiry into the nature of perception, memory, and presence.

As a teacher and researcher, Diogo has contributed to the field of experimental cinema and video art, exploring questions of authorship, spectatorship, and transmediality. His work on the aesthetics of error, glitch, and interruption, feeds directly into his art, which embraces imperfection as a gateway to the real. His background in pedagogy informs a generous, open-ended approach to process: he values the work of not-knowing, of following intuition over formula.

Whether developing a spoken word album like Telefonia Abismo, a video-dance ritual or a mobile- app-based film experiment, Diogo is ultimately interested in expanding the boundaries of what art can be as experience, as encounter, as mirror. He believes that creation, at its best, is co-creation: with the material, with the unknown, and with the other.

Vasco Diogo was born in Lisbon in 1970. He has a degree in Sociology by Universidade Nova de Lisboa, a master degree in Social Sciences by Universidade de Lisboa and a PhD in Communication Sciences by Universidade Nova de Lisboa, with the thesis: "Video: specificity, hybridity and experimentation"(scholarship by FCT, 2008). From 2008 to 2020 he was a professor at University of Beira Interior teaching mainly cinema directing, new cinemas and experimental cinema.

After being co-founder of Projecto Teatral, works, since 1998 in performance, video art and experimental cinema around themes such as self-presentation, truth and manipulation. In experimental cinema he has won several international awards (more than 70). He has shown his works in several exhibitions and festivals in Portugal, Spain, Italy, USA, Canada, India, Germany, France, Cyprus, Poland, etc.
