Ashley Gray

Ashley Gray

Biography

Ashley Gray, working under the artist name Human, is a UK-born digital artist based in London. With a background in multimedia and a Master's degree in Computer Games Art from Teesside University, Gray has developed a practice spanning more than a decade, combining 3D sculpting, rendering, and digital painting to create surreal, figurative, and conceptually driven imagery.

His work explores the complexities of human experience, including vulnerability, grief, isolation, hope, and the search for meaning. Through symbolic imagery, anatomical forms, and the interplay of light and darkness, Gray examines the tensions between fragility and resilience, despair and hope, and the individual and the collective. His compositions occupy dreamlike, psychologically charged spaces, inviting viewers to find their own points of connection and interpretation.

Working primarily with ZBrush and Photoshop, Gray constructs three-dimensional forms and environments before developing them through composition, lighting, colour, and digital painting. His process is guided by the needs of each image, using digital technology as a means of giving form to ideas and experiences that can be difficult to articulate through words alone.

The name Human reflects Gray's interest in what connects people while keeping the focus on the work rather than the person who makes it. The work is offered to the viewer on its own terms, free from any expectation that knowing the artist should influence how it is received. Whether an image resonates or not is for the viewer to decide. For Gray, the name is a reminder that the artist is not separate from the audience, but another person attempting to make something meaningful and share it with others.

Gray's work has received international exposure through exhibitions, publications, and artist features, including Creativepool, AATONAU, Artist Closeup, Art Dealer Street, and Contemporary Art Curator. His recognition includes the People's Choice Award from Creativepool in 2023, Editor's Choice awards from CGSociety in 2011 and 2017, the Premier Artist Prize from Contemporary Art Station in 2025 and 2026, and the Collectors Art Prize from Contemporary Art Collectors in 2025. He continues to develop an independent practice centred on the contradictions of human existence and the enduring search for meaning, connection, and hope.

Artist Statement

My work explores the tension between darkness and light, despair and hope, vulnerability and resilience. For me, art is a way of expressing emotions and experiences that are difficult to articulate through words alone, yet feel too important to leave unspoken. Through my work, I try to give these things a presence: something that can be seen, considered, and felt by others.

I approach this process with care. I am not interested in shock or obscenity for their own sake. I want the imagery to serve something meaningful, to confront difficult subjects without losing sight of the humanity within them.

My practice has developed over more than a decade, combining careful planning, technical construction, and visual experimentation. The process of building an image, from its initial conception through three-dimensional composition and construction to its final two-dimensional form, is an attempt to bring something into the world that I feel deserves to exist beyond myself.

Ultimately, my work is an act of expression and reflection: an effort to acknowledge what matters, to give it form, and to hold on to the possibility of hope without denying the darkness that surrounds it.
