Britt-Marie Tidemand
Biography
Britt-Marie Tidemand is a Swedish contemporary artist whose figurative-abstract paintings explore identity, transformation, relationships, and the emotional landscapes that exist beneath what is immediately visible.
Based in Gothenburg, Sweden, Tidemand came to art through an unconventional path. With a background in business, fashion, and design, followed by a long professional career in senior roles within finance, property, and business development, she spent much of her life in environments shaped by structure, analysis, and responsibility. Yet creativity had always been present. Eventually, painting became the place where structure could give way to intuition and where experiences, emotions, and unanswered questions could take visual form.
Her work moves between the recognisable and the ambiguous. Forms emerge from layered surfaces, sometimes clearly, sometimes only as traces. Working primarily in oil on canvas, Tidemand builds her paintings through colour, texture, brushes, and palette knives, allowing each layer to influence what follows. Rather than beginning with a fixed answer, she allows the work to evolve through the process.
Central to her practice is the belief that a painting is not complete until it meets its viewer. Tidemand does not seek to dictate what should be seen or felt. A figure, a gesture, or an unexpected form may carry one meaning for her and something entirely different for another person. That space between the artist's intention and the viewer's experience is where much of her work exists.
Over time, her artistic language has expanded beyond the canvas. A painting may become a story; the story may become a song; the song may develop into film. Words, music, moving image, material, and architecture increasingly form part of the same artistic world. Rather than treating these disciplines as separate, Tidemand uses them to deepen the emotional experience surrounding the original work.
This development has led to increasingly immersive presentations in which the exhibition itself becomes part of the artwork. Her 2026 project A Mystery Unfolds brings together painting, music, film, storytelling, material, and architectural space, exploring what can happen when different forms of expression begin to speak to one another.
Tidemand's work has reached audiences internationally, including presentations in New York, Paris, Copenhagen, Athens, York, and Gothenburg. Yet international recognition is not the destination of her practice. At its centre remains something more personal: a continuing investigation into what it means to be human, what we reveal, what we conceal, how we change, and what remains when familiar identities begin to fall away.
Her art does not offer a final answer. It invites the viewer to stop, look again, and discover something of their own within the work.
For Britt-Marie Tidemand, art is ultimately not simply something she creates.
Art is not what I do. Art is who I am.
Artist Statement
My work begins with a question rather than an answer.
Through figurative-abstract painting, I explore identity, transformation, relationships, silence, and emotional presence. I am interested in what exists beneath the visible: the thoughts we do not express, the emotions we carry, the masks we wear, and the moments when something within us begins to change.
I work primarily in oil on canvas, building each painting through layers of colour, texture, and movement. I rarely want the image to explain itself completely. Forms may appear, disappear, or change as the work develops. I allow intuition to become part of the process and leave space for the unexpected.
For me, a painting does not have one fixed meaning.
What I see is shaped by my experiences. What another person sees is shaped by theirs. The viewer therefore becomes part of the work, bringing memories, emotions, and interpretations that I could never create for them.
In recent years, my artistic practice has expanded beyond the canvas. A painting may become a story. The story may become a song. The song may become a film. Words, music, moving image, material, and space can become extensions of the original work, creating an experience that surrounds rather than simply presents the painting.
Yet the painting remains the beginning.
I want my work to create a moment of stillness: a reason to stop, look again, and perhaps recognise something that cannot easily be put into words.
I do not want to tell the viewer what to feel.
I want to open the door.
What happens beyond it belongs to them.
Art is not what I do. Art is who I am.
