Biography
Chan Suk On is a visionary contemporary artist, photographer, and editor based in Hong Kong whose practice bridges the transition from traditional photojournalism and documentary photography to conceptual fine art and alternative photographic processes.
She graduated from the Hong Kong Polytechnic University with a Bachelor of Photographic Design. She gained her Master of Arts in Fine Arts at the Chinese University of Hong Kong.
Transforming everyday life experiences and overlooked mechanical parts, such as deconstructed analogue camera components, Chan investigates time, memory, permanence, and transformation.
Her artworks have been exhibited nationally and internationally in Hong Kong, Taiwan, Japan, China, the United Kingdom, the United States, Italy, Paris, Vienna, Spain, Switzerland, Portugal, Belgium, Canada, and Monaco.
Her first book, "Chan Suk On Conceptual Photography," was published by Contemporary Art Station in Barcelona in December 2022. Artist Statement
Chan Suk On likes taking photographs. Sometimes, her camera needs to be fixed. The maintenance fees are very expensive. What's the secret inside the camera? She used a lot of strength to loosen the screws to satisfy her curiosity. She discovered the small parts inside and revealed the unknown things hidden in the camera.
There is no connection between the parts. They are not geometric but are composed of irregular shapes based on different functions. "Loose Pieces" presents the question: when an object has no function, does it still have value? When every small part is disassembled, like an anatomical picture, and has no function, its beauty naturally emerges. She lets the objects be displayed and breathe naturally, allowing viewers to appreciate the craftsmanship of the creator.
Her new artwork, "Loose Piece: A Charming Woman," uses humor and irony by giving a human description to a cold, mechanical object. She created a face using old black plastic parts, rings, and gears placed on a white sculpture. Arranged carefully like a classic portrait, the piece looks like a machine intelligence creating its own self-portrait from a broken camera. Curated with care, heavy machine parts turn into gentle facial features - rings become earrings, and gears look like eyes.
This work asks us to rethink human connection and beauty. It shows that even broken, discarded trash can form a meaningful figure, suggesting that her own identity is also made of many loose pieces.
Now, she is taking her art in a new direction. In her 2026 artworks, "Loose Pieces of a Charming Woman" and "Loose Pieces of AI Thinker," she gives her "Loose Pieces" photos to "Google Gemini," giving a real, physical face to artificial intelligence. She builds human-like figures using real camera pieces and clear bodies filled with colourful gears. These sculptures look like brains made from code and machinery.
Her work is a big step forward for AI art. It suggests that digital technology does not have to stay hidden behind screens. By combining old camera parts with smart AI concepts, Chan Suk On turns cold machine code into warm human art.
