Christy Chor
Biography
Christy Chor is an award-winning Canadian ceramic artist who creates narrative-driven sculptural work exploring the sensory dialogue between humanity and the natural world. Her master theme, BACK TO NATURE, unfolds through successive series, including Bird, Bear, and her Mountain works. These series serve as tactile meditations on wonder, ecological imbalance, and the possibility of rebirth.
Chor's practice merges cross-cultural perspectives, uniting her ceramics education from Sheridan College in Canada with professional experience in Asia's design industry. Through this unique lens, she creates sculptures that are both conceptually communicative and masterfully composed.
Artist Statement
Working with clay is a sacred dialogue between human intention and the earth's ancient memory. My hands do not command; they converse. Through hand-building, marbling, and slip-casting, I balance purposeful guidance with surrender to the material's wisdom. Gravity becomes a co-artist; fissures transform into distinctive features. The kiln's fire works alchemy - transmuting fragility into enduring strength, temporary form into permanence.
What emerges are preserved dialogues: sculptures that speak a universal language and awaken forgotten senses. In a world adrift from nature, they serve as silent anchors, inviting reconnection with both outer and inner wilderness.
Across my work, I give form to essential balances. In the Polar Bear Series, I explore survival within ecological crisis - strength and vulnerability as companions. In the Bird Series, I capture life stories carried on silent wings: each feather a memory, each flight a narrative of resilience. Through these bodies of work, I let opposing truths coexist, believing that meaning resides not in resolution, but in the space between.
