Frederica Henrieta Lecornu
Biography
Frederica Henrieta Lecornu is a Slovak-born contemporary visual artist based in the United Kingdom. She graduated in Industrial Design from the Technical University in Košice in 1986 and further developed her artistic education through painting studies in Brno.
Her artistic world is shaped by dreams, imagination, emotion, and a fascination with the extraordinary possibilities of visual expression. Her work moves between imaginative figurative painting, dreamlike narratives, surreal imagery, and abstraction, without being confined to any single artistic style.
Dreams occupy a particularly important place in her creative universe. In paintings such as Dreaming Woman, she creates poetic visual narratives in which recognisable figures and carefully constructed imagery explore the mysterious relationship between dreams, memory, and reality.
Among her current projects is Rivers of Dreams, an ambitious five-metre-long painting on paper arranged as a vertical composition and now nearing completion. The work traces the symbolic journey of a muse - from her emergence and awakening to her gradual development. Through a succession of dreamlike visions, it explores how inspiration takes shape, how the muse evolves, and how imagination transforms into artistic creation. The painting unfolds as a visual narrative, inviting viewers to follow the muse through an imaginative world of dreams and transformation.
Alongside her dream-inspired paintings, Lecornu explores nature, botanical forms, underwater worlds, and expressive abstraction. Working with acrylics, oils, mixed media, and experimental techniques, she combines colour, texture, movement, and intricate detail to create works ranging from intimate compositions to monumental paintings.
Her artistic approach is guided by curiosity, independence, and a willingness to experiment. Some paintings tell recognisable stories, while others encourage viewers to discover hidden forms and personal meanings within abstract compositions.
Having continued her artistic journey beyond her native Slovakia, Lecornu is developing an international presence while remaining committed to her own artistic vision.
For her, painting is not simply a representation of what can be seen. It is a way of giving form to imagination, making dreams visible, and creating worlds that exist beyond the limits of everyday reality.
Artist Statement
My art begins where visible reality meets the limitless world of imagination.
I do not seek to reproduce the world as it appears, but to reveal what exists beyond its visible boundaries - dreams, emotions, memories, and the mysterious landscapes of the human mind.
My artistic practice moves freely between figurative painting, surreal imagery, and abstraction. I refuse to confine my creativity to a single style or technique. Each work demands its own language, its own materials, and its own way of coming into existence.
Colour, movement, texture, and light are fundamental to my expression. I explore their relationships through experimentation, often allowing unexpected processes to become part of the creative dialogue. Yet beneath this freedom lies a deliberate artistic vision.
Dreams are a recurring source of inspiration. They offer a space where reality can be transformed, where the impossible becomes natural, and where familiar forms acquire new meanings.
My ongoing project Rivers of Dreams, a five-metre-long vertical painting, explores the emergence and evolution of the muse - a poetic journey through imagination, inspiration, and the awakening of creative consciousness.
I believe that a painting should offer more than an image. It should invite the viewer into another dimension of perception, awaken curiosity, and leave space for personal interpretation.
Ultimately, my work is an exploration of artistic freedom - the freedom to imagine, to transform, and to create worlds that did not exist before.
