Frederick Haddox
Biography
Born in Memphis, Tennessee, Frederick Haddox is an American Expressionist based in Budapest, Hungary. Haddox received an early education in art from his father. The two would have regular drawing sessions. Despite his constant frustration, Haddox was noted for his art throughout school. By the time he entered university, Frederick was also skilled in comic art and animation.
While at George Mason University in the Washington, D.C. area, Frederick worked as a veterinary technician. Having experience working with many kinds of animals, he learned more about their anatomy and natural movements. Haddox's focus on science and English was redirected to art after enrolling in a German Expressionism course.
Through exploring artists such as Franz Marc and Wassily Kandinsky, Frederick found an instant kinship with works coming from Southern Germany and Austria. He then felt the need to paint life and how he emotionally connected with it.
After graduation, Haddox travelled to Europe as an English teacher and painter. During that time, he created work in locations such as Hungary, Japan, Oman, and Austria.
In the past eight years, Haddox has participated in a number of group exhibitions in Venice, Florence, Rome, London, Barcelona, and Vienna, as well as solo exhibitions in Budapest. While currently represented by The Toolip Gallery at Balegasse 6 in Vienna, Austria, Haddox’s work was also featured as part of a group exhibition at The Palazzo Albrizzi-Capello in Venice, Italy, last July.
As an Expressionist, Haddox focuses more on colour, form, and line than on composition. This results in his work adopting both abstract and figurative qualities. Using colour, he creates emotional lines that are more harmonic than disruptive. Haddox’s lines symbolise energetic movement that can be directed, broken, reformed, or contained within or outside his human subjects, which are often hidden within the forms of animals.
Artist Statement
I'm an Expressionist whose work focuses on energy, flow, and vibration. Most of my works combine animals and human couples. Love connects and lies at the heart of my subjects.
My language is in the form of line. Although lines have often put limits on where we can go, how we can think, or what we can say, lines that flow alongside each other can bring us together and make us stronger.
I believe our basic needs for love, life, and happiness are aligned regardless of our physical and cultural differences. I wish to demonstrate through my paintings that lines can “liberate” rather than “limit” us. Because of this, I believe my paintings offer solutions rather than highlight problems.
