Josip Rubes

Biography

Josip Rubes was born in Jastrebarsko, Croatia, in 1942. He graduated from the Faculty of Medicine in Zagreb. Rubes also studied painting at the Arthouse College of Visual Arts in Ljubljana, Slovenia. In 2012, he graduated with a degree in painting inspired by J. Pollock.

Having arrived in the Hrvatsko Zagorje region in 1972, he found inspiration in the beauty of the landscape. Since 2008, he has been painting in an abstract style inspired by J. Pollock’s painting. In the last few years, he has been concerned with geometric abstraction.

Rubes has had 80 solo exhibitions and participated in around 300 group exhibitions in Croatia and abroad. Since 2020, he has received several international awards for contemporary painting.

Artist Statement

I spent my childhood in a picturesque village with wooden houses and many domestic animals. I developed my creativity in that environment. My first drawings were already created then.

In Croatia, I am known as a landscape painter of the region in which I live. In recent years, I have come to like geometric abstraction the most.

Geometric abstraction is extremely interesting to me because it provides the ability to create works in a geometric style, and great precision and imagination are required in the creation of geometric shapes.
