Majo Portilla

Biography

Majo Portilla is an internationally exhibiting contemporary artist of Latin American heritage, based in the Netherlands. Her artistic practice explores human connection, identity, resilience, belonging, and the emotional complexities that shape our relationships.

Working across abstract, figurative, and contemporary expression, Portilla creates visually distinctive works that combine expressive colour, symbolic elements, and layered textures. Her paintings invite viewers to look beyond appearances and discover the deeply personal yet universally recognizable emotions beneath them.

Her work has been presented internationally, including exhibitions at the Carrousel du Louvre in Paris, Art Connects Women in Dubai, and art events in Italy, Spain, Mauritius, and the Netherlands. Her artistic journey has also included participation in cultural initiatives associated with COP28 Dubai and the Sustainable Development Goals.

Portilla’s work has received international recognition through several art prizes and distinctions, including the Collectors Art Prize, the Botticelli International Award, and the International Prize Velázquez y Goya. Her artistic career has also been featured in publications including Vogue, Vanity Fair, Tatler, and The World of Interiors.

Beyond her studio practice, Portilla is the founder of Majo Portilla Art Gallery in Hilversum and actively contributes to international exhibitions, curatorial projects, and public art initiatives. As an Art Ambassador for the Netherlands within SDGs Through Arts, she advocates for creativity as a means of encouraging dialogue and social awareness.

Her 2026 series, The Shape of a Thought, marks a refined evolution in her artistic language. Through intimate, faceless figures, restrained earthy palettes, and recurring red threads, the collection explores vulnerability, emotional attachment, absence, and the invisible connections between people.

For Portilla, art is not simply something to admire. It is an invitation to feel, question, remember, and recognize something of ourselves in another person’s story.

Artist Statement

I believe that art begins where words are no longer enough.

My work is an exploration of the human experience: the emotions we carry, the identities we construct, the connections we seek, and the stories we sometimes struggle to express.

Rooted in my Latin American heritage and shaped by a life across cultures, my artistic language moves between abstraction and figuration. Colour, texture, movement, and symbolism become instruments through which I explore vulnerability, resilience, belonging, and the complexities of human relationships.

I am particularly drawn to what remains invisible: the weight of an unspoken feeling, the memory of a touch, the distance between two people, or the courage required to remain emotionally open.

In my recent series, The Shape of a Thought, I have embraced a more restrained visual language. Faceless figures, earthy tones, fragmented compositions, and recurring red threads allow me to explore the delicate tension between presence and absence, intimacy and distance, attachment and freedom.

The absence of facial features is intentional. By removing individual identities, I invite viewers to recognize themselves within the work. The red thread becomes a metaphor for the invisible connections that shape us, sometimes holding us together, sometimes reminding us of what we cannot hold.

Beyond aesthetics, I believe art carries a responsibility to encourage dialogue, challenge perceptions, and create meaningful connections across cultural and social boundaries.

I do not paint to provide answers. I paint to give emotions a place to exist.

Ultimately, my ambition is simple: to create work that people do not merely see, but recognize, remember, and feel long after they have walked away.
