Brigitte Bourger
Biography
Brigitte Bourger is a French photographer and visual artist who has made her home in French Polynesia, where she has lived for over forty years. Originally trained as a pharmacist, she eventually devoted herself fully to photography, guided by a lasting fascination with water, the ocean, and coastal landscapes.
Her work moves between minimalism and abstraction, combining landscape photography with a painterly approach. Rather than describing a place, she moves away from its literal representation, allowing forms and compositions to take on a more open, ambiguous quality.
Her photographic book Éphémères Impressions, devoted to the fragility of the marine environment in French Polynesia, received second place in the Nature category at PX3 Paris in 2020 and first place at TIFA Tokyo in 2021.
Her practice takes her across a wide range of landscapes, from tropical lagoons to glaciers and wetlands around the world. While the places change, water remains her constant subject: its relationship with the land and what emerges when familiar visual references disappear.
Artist Statement
In Between
At times, sand no longer looks quite like sand, and water no longer quite like water. They meet and merge in a state that has no name.
These photographs were taken from the air, above coastlines, deltas, and tidal flats. Places that are neither solid land nor open sea, but constantly changing spaces in between.
Seen from above, familiar landscapes take on a different appearance. A beach can look like an ink wash, a river like a vein. The landscape becomes a surface of lines and colours, sometimes blurred, sometimes almost painterly.
These images are not intended to document places. They explore the changing forms of land and water, where the familiar becomes less certain and the real moves towards abstraction.
