Stefano Paradiso

Biography

Stefano Paradiso (Rome, 1969) is an Italian photographer and cinematographer. He graduated in Photography from the Roberto Rossellini School of Cinema and Television in Rome in 1988.

After beginning his career as a camera operator, he moved to France in 2001, where he began working as a Director of Photography, later continuing his career on feature films and television productions in Italy and internationally. More than twenty-five years of experience in cinema have deeply shaped his relationship with light, time, and the construction of the image.

After returning to Italy, he began developing a personal photographic practice that gradually evolved into an increasingly independent body of research. His practice combines analogue and digital processes while maintaining a strong connection with the darkroom, experimentation, and printing. His experience in cinema thus coexists with a photographic practice in which techniques, materials, and processes become an integral part of the construction of the image.

Over the years, he has developed several long-term photographic projects. Among these are Xolivo, Imago Plantae, and, more recently, Almost Blue, each marking a different moment and visual language within his photographic research.

Artist Statement

Photography is where my cinematic vision meets a more intimate form of research. After more than twenty-five years in cinema, I felt the need for a different relationship with the image: a slower space in which observation, listening, and sensation could become part of the creative process.

I am interested in what happens when the familiar begins to change, when a form, a landscape, or a fragment of reality moves away from its immediate appearance and opens itself to another perception.

My work develops through long-term projects, each with its own visual language. I work with both analogue and digital processes, but the physical experience of photography remains essential to me. The darkroom, materials, and printing are not simply technical stages; they are part of the construction of the image.

I do not seek complete control over the process. I am drawn to its unpredictability. An unexpected result, a variation, or an error can reveal a direction I had not imagined. Sometimes I follow it, repeat it deliberately, and allow it to become part of the work.
