Howard Harris
Howard's fascination with visual perception and design began after a life-changing incident involving a model rocket engine explosion, which left him blind for over three months. He earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts from the Kansas City Art Institute and initially worked in architectural design and space planning. Later, he pursued a Master of Industrial Design at the Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, studying under the renowned design theorist Rowena Reed Kostellow.
In 1975, Howard returned to Denver and dedicated over 35 years to blending design and technology in the field of direct marketing. Throughout his career, he expanded his knowledge into economics, computer sciences, marketing, graphic arts, and financial management, earning numerous professional awards, including the Small Business Bureau’s Small Business of the Year. After retiring from this successful career, he shifted his creative energy toward fine art, particularly photography—his enduring passion.
In 2017, Howard received a U.S. Patent for a Layered Artwork, highlighting the originality and inventiveness of his work. Today, he considers himself a curious student of art, philosophy, technology, and invention, leveraging every available tool to create compelling images. He often invents new tools if existing ones do not suffice to express his vision. His approach is characterized by a tendency to question the crowd’s direction, choosing to explore alternative paths..
His artistic process begins with capturing a single frame using a digital camera, which serves as a memory marker of a moment. Howard strives to internalize the full dimensionality of that moment, using various technologies to analyze and exaggerate color, line, and form—transforming the image into a symphony of visual elements that evoke time, space, perspective, and emotion. His philosophical foundation is rooted in studies of Eastern thought, fractals, fluid dynamics, quantum physics, and chaos theory, particularly the concept that observation influences reality and connectivity is a constant.
Howard’s work starts with experiencing the world’s wonders, exploring the polymorphic and dynamic nature of reality. His process involves translating these variations into visual art that sometimes reflects direct memories or takes on a life of its own. He believes that visual reality is subjective, shaped by both inner states and external qualities, such as light, color, movement, and space.
His concept of Techspressionism seeks to recreate the human perceptual experience—its fluidity and complexity—through dimensional photographic art. Inspired by Josef Albers’ idea that “abstraction is real,” Howard advocates for going beyond static, two-dimensional representations to incorporate multiple dimensions of time, emotion, and interaction. Mastery of technology is essential, but the artist must also transcend technique to infuse personal expression and emotional depth into their work.
Howard aims to embody Thoreau’s insight that “It’s not what you look at that matters; it’s what you see.” His goal is to help viewers realize their own unique emotional and experiential responses. He views each image as a storytelling conduit—never frozen in time—offering a three-dimensional, spherical experience of light, feeling, and space. Surprising reactions frequently emerge from viewers, who often express amazement at his dynamic, movement-filled photographic constructions, challenging the expectation of static, predictable images.
Howard Harris is a Techspressionist artist based in Denver, Colorado, whose work investigates the complexities of visual perception and design. He received a BFA from the Kansas City Art Institute and a Master's in Industrial Design from Pratt Institute in New York, where he studied with design theorist Rowena Reed Kostellow. His educational background also includes studies in Economics and Computer Science at the University of Missouri, as well as Sublimation Color Research at the Rochester Institute of Technology. He holds certifications in marketing, graphic arts, and financial management from the University of Utah and Northwestern University.
With over 35 years of experience integrating design and technology, Harris has received numerous prestigious awards, including the Who’s Who Worldwide Lifetime Achievement Award for Small Businessperson of the Year, the Design Professional of the Year award from Presidential Who’s Who Marketing, and multiple industry accolades. In 2017, he was granted a U.S. Patent for his innovative layered artwork apparatus and methodology, underscoring the uniqueness of his photographic work.
Harris has been honored as Artist of the Decade by Artists for a Green Planet. He has received international prizes, including the Raffaello, Giulio Cesare, Leonardo da Vinci, and Caravaggio awards. He has served as a trustee of The Kansas City Art Institute, and his artwork is exhibited internationally and represented by galleries across the United States, the United Kingdom, and Europe.
