Raúl Vega
Raúl went to school of Architecture including his 4th year in Florence, Italy. It was during that year that he decided he would become a photographer. More than anything, he has been exposed to art from all periods and has developed a visual sense that he’s applied to his work. Raúl couldn’t have predicted the work he is currently doing. Vega’s “new work” reflect a personal growth resulting from learning the new digital photographic platforms.
Raúl’s new fine art abstractions reflect a personal growth that allows him the ability to assemble images in new and unexpected ways. Though rooted in a traditional photographic representation of reality, the images, when combined with other elements such as color, texture, scale and varied opacities, allow for a new visual language, Vega’s new work flips back and forth between and the rigors of representation and the liberating ambiguity of abstraction. Raúl’s work deals with the acknowledgement that we live in a rainbow of chaos and randomness.
Raúl Vega attended Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo, CA and the University of Florence, Italy majoring in architecture. After college, Raúl quickly turned to photography. His award-winning photographs have appeared, often as covers, in such magazines as Time, Esquire, Andy Warhol’s Interview, the New Yorker, the New York Times, Glamour, Vogue and Vanity Fair, among many others.
His portrait of Carl Sagan was selected to be part of a special exhibit: “Forces of Nature: Voices that Shaped Environmentalism” for the National Portrait Gallery in Washington D.C. Raúl has shown work for an Aids benefit at the Annenberg Space for Photography and co-curated benefit photography exhibitions at the Leica Gallery.
Raúl teaches Photography classes for the Los Angeles Dept. of Cultural Affairs. Raúl has been teaching at Otis College of Art & Design since Fall 2010. He has also been teaching children and high schoolers photography with emphasis on editing for the past 5 years. Raúl lives in Los Angeles.
