Ulla Plougmand
ULLA is a Danish-born painter, living and working in London England. Her colourful and often soulful canvases over the years can be found in a number of collections worldwide, public as well as private. Some collections are listed under Saatchiart Collections. Several works have won prizes.
She creates colourful, often philosophically inspired, paintings mainly on canvas - a result of having lived a colourful life. Every one of her canvases is unique, the subject - whether real or imagined - conceived and executed entirely based on the quirky and predominantly sunny way her mind works in. She relies, as she says, almost entirely on her ‘mind’s eye’.
She jokes, “I was born with a paint brush in my hand..I have been fortunate enough to be able to pursue my passion for painting for many years and hope sincerely I can do so till ‘I fall out of my little red, Danish clogs’. Every day is a new adventure”.
The Beginning.
ULLA grew up in Denmark surrounded by nature, deep forests, large fields and sprawling countryside, the wild North Sea not far away. This undoubtedly contributed to her inspiration as an artist. Her father was a dedicated country GP and her mother a psychologist. Her upbringing was liberal, but caring.
Her inspiration.
She travelled the globe, ever open to new impressions, life, beauty, passion.
Besides, she admits to being inspired by diverse sources, especially from great philosophers to painters/artists:
from Plato, Leonardo da Vinci to Michelangelo, and onwards to especially the post-impressionists, Van Gogh being a firm favourite and influence.
She especially admires David Hockney in today’s ’jungle’ of artists, as she puts it.
Education.
Broad and diverse. A degree in Danish literature (Aalborg, Denmark)). She also studied Latin - with a special interest in medicine, Copenhagen, Denmark.
As a young woman she studied croquis (life drawing, nudes), later painting - with cascades of colours - straight from the heart. She is largely autodidact.
Her female forms were, as she says, mainly inspired by her years as a model.
Later she was also strongly influenced as well as guided by her English mentor, the painter Anthony Eyton RA, London England.
Of other important influences she mentions Existentialism, the philosophy, as well as yoga, and meditation. The list is long…
Her artistic journey is ongoing, by now seriously tinged with philosophy, her use of nature, trees and flowers, as metaphors for people in our increasingly confused and tumultuous world.
Latest.

A Landscape of the Mind: The Evocative World of Ulla Plougmand
ULLA is a Danish-born artist / painter living and working in London England. She grew up in the sprawling Danish countryside. Her father was a dedicated GP, her mother a psychologist, her upbringing was liberal, but caring. She later studied in Copenhagen.
Her colourful and soulful canvases can be found in a number of collections worldwide, both public and private. Her work now span three decades. Her style overall is contemporary Impressionism, but broader. She has covered several diverse subjects: from dreamy landscapes (dreamscapes), female forms, the cosmos, to now philosophical nostalgia, often seen in her memories of Scandinavia and Dream Blues.
She has exhibited her work, often solo, in several countries, mainly in England (London) and the USA. Several have won prizes. ULLA has travelled the world widely and later ‘interpreted’ her experiences on canvas. Wherever she went she sketched and took photos - often to never take a second look, it all went into her ‘life’s computer’, as she calls it.
Over the last few years her work has become increasingly philosophically inspired, often showing fond nostalgia. She may use trees or flowers as metaphors for people. She is showing her passion throughout for a variety of subjects: from dreamscapes, the female form, the cosmos, lately to her hope for a better and more peaceful world.
She will use an abundance of colours - as a result of having lived a colourful life - her ‘Danish blues’ are a recurring favourite. She relies almost entirely on her ‘mind’s eye’ when she paints. As ULLA says, “I paint my life in colour, from the heart”.
