Christine Hendry
Biography
Christine Hendry’s path to becoming a celebrated photographer is as unique as the images she creates. While her current artistic endeavors might seem a world away, her foundational journey was deeply rooted in the science of well-being. Hendry holds advanced degrees in Physical Therapy, Exercise Science, and Acupuncture, fields that underscore a profound understanding of the human body and its intricate connection to the environment. This academic grounding instilled in her a meticulous approach to detail and a keen eye for observation, skills that would later translate seamlessly into the visual arts.
Her formal introduction to photography began with coursework at San Diego City College, a period when theoretical knowledge started to meld with creative passion. However, it was a transformative trip to Africa that served as a significant turning point, irrevocably shaping her professional trajectory. Documenting wildlife in its natural habitat presented a dynamic challenge - the fleeting moments, the raw energy, and the urgent need to capture an unfolding narrative before it vanished. This experience ignited a fervent dedication to photography, solidifying her commitment to this powerful medium of storytelling.
Hendry’s photographic style is characterized by its elegant simplicity and an unwavering commitment to natural light. She champions clean compositions, allowing the intrinsic beauty of her subjects to command attention without artifice. This approach is deeply influenced by legendary artists such as Tom Mangelsen, Jimmy Chin, Galen Rowell, and David Yarrow, masters who have consistently pushed the boundaries of landscape and wildlife photography, imbuing their work with a sense of grandeur and profound connection to the wild.
Her creative process is fueled by a deep appreciation for the vibrant palettes and emotional resonance found in the works of Impressionist masters like Monet and the expressive dimensionality of Van Gogh. Hendry doesn’t merely replicate their use of color; she translates their spirit into the natural world. Her inspiration is drawn from direct immersion in nature. While out exploring her surroundings, she actively seeks out images that resonate with her visually and emotionally, capturing moments of stillness amidst the dynamic energy of the wild. Themes of nature, stillness, and the compelling power of color are recurring motifs in her oeuvre, each photograph a carefully considered exploration of these essential elements.
Christine Hendry’s dedication to her craft has garnered recognition and opportunities to share her vision with a wider audience. She was awarded a Da Vinci Genius Award in Milan, Italy. She has exhibited in San Diego, California, and at the Women’s Biennale in London. Other exhibitions include Miami Art Week, Art Expo Milan, and Art Basel. She has been published in Zine Magazine, Fine Art News, and Artist Closeup. She is driven by a continuous desire to explore remote locations, to witness firsthand the breathtaking landscapes and captivating wildlife that fuel her artistic passion. This commitment to ongoing discovery ensures that her portfolio will continue to expand, offering fresh perspectives and deepening our connection to the natural world.
Christine Hendry’s photography is more than just a visual record; it is an invitation to reconnect with the awe-inspiring power and delicate balance of our natural world. Her disciplined approach, honed by her background in healthcare and refined through dedicated photographic study and immersive experiences, allows her to translate the profound beauty she witnesses into compelling visual narratives. In an era often dominated by the ephemeral, her work stands as a powerful reminder of enduring wonder, urging us to cherish and protect the extraordinary planet we inhabit. Her images are a testament to the fact that beauty and wonder are present everywhere, waiting to be discovered by those who take the time to look.
