Joanna Levesley

Joanna Levesley

Joanna is a self-taught, award-winning contemporary ink artist from the UK. She draws inspiration from the surrealistic approach of Salvador Dali and M.C. Escher. Joanna is dedicated to creating abstract and fantasy pieces that aim to explore the beauty of the human spirit through her art. She works with various mediums and styles, the most distinctive being pen and ink. Her work is known for capturing the eye and drawing the viewer in to explore further, captivating the audience with hidden details.

Her work evolves purely from her imagination, drawing inspiration from whatever piques her interest. Joanna aspires to create complex pieces that engage viewers and offer a glimpse into her unique perspective of the world. She believes in using complex lines to develop powerful concepts and is driven by a passion for capturing the underlying beauty and energy of her creations. Her art focuses on honing in on the fundamental line and exploring the limitless possibilities of the imagination.

Joanna's artistic creations are characterised by dramatic and surrealistic compositions, which she achieves through black and white pen and ink drawings and acrylic paintings. Her work delves into representations and concepts that are uniquely expressible through drawing, deliberately leaving the complete structure undisclosed. This deliberate ambiguity deconstructs the results to a degree where meaning becomes fluid and interpretations abound, engaging the viewer in a thought-provoking manner without being confined by reality.

As an artist Joanna believes in using complex lines to create powerful concepts. Her work is driven by a passion to capture the underlying beauty and energy of things by honing into the fundamental line, exploring the limitless possibilities of the imagination. They are an investigation into representations of situations as well as depictions and ideas that can only be realized in drawing, never showing the complete structure. The results are deconstructed to the extent that meaning is shifted and possible interpretation becomes multifaceted and therefore manipulating the viewer to create confusion without being hindered by the historical reality.

By examining the ambiguity and origination via abstraction, she tries to increase the dynamic between audience and author by objectifying emotions and investigating the duality that develops through different interpretations. This creates intense personal moments masterfully created by means of rules and omissions, acceptance and refusal, luring the viewer round and round in circles, and by applying abstraction, she often creates works, upon which thoughts that have apparently just been developed are manifested.
