Marcel Jomphe
In his recent artistic exploration, he has the sense of shaping atoms to form novel representations of the living and plant kingdoms. Living entities adapt to their surroundings, so a modified environment will cause them to adapt as well. Nature possesses an amazing ability to adapt and evolve in response to its environment, and this concept inspires him.
As humans continue to alter their environment, nature will respond in kind, giving rise to unexpected patterns. These designs are carefully crafted, meticulously refined, and are unique to his imagination. They emerge from deep contemplation, shaping themselves within him. Through iterative sketching, these ideas evolve into intricate masterpieces. This process allows him to develop a unique style, a harmonious blend of reality and imagination, and a distinct identity.
Marcel Jomphe, born in 1955 in Havre-Saint-Pierre, now lives in Rimouski. He primarily works in drawing, blending realism with creativity. He draws inspiration from the intricate forms found in nature’s vegetal realm, aiming to foster a more intimate relationship between people and their environment.
In 1977, he embarked on a career as a botanical artist at the Canadian Museum of Nature. He subsequently worked at Laval University’s Louis-Marie Herbarium and at Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada. His illustrations have appeared in over 80 scientific publications. Since 2012, he has dedicated himself entirely to his artistic pursuits.
His work has been showcased in over 28 local and international exhibitions in Canada, the United States, Spain, Italy, and France. He has received several international awards. His work has appeared in numerous art books and periodicals. They can also be found in both public and private collections.
